Logos are a very important starting point for your brand. It really is best to have a distinctive logo as you start your business. The value of a logo grows over time as more and more "impressions" are delivered to your audience.
Doing it yourself:
If you are on a tight budget, you can try one of the many do-it-yourself logo programs that are on the market.
Using Stock Photos in your Logo Design:
You can get a lot of great ideas just by browsing the stock photo sites (Fotolia.com, Shutterstock.com, iStockPhoto.com). Unfortunately, most stock photo companies restrict the use of their stock photos in logos or trademarks. However, you can come up with a basic logo mockup from free stock photo comps. You could then take your rough mockup to a professional logo designer and go from there.
I work with one particularly talented artist who does great work at reasonable prices to whom I refer my clients.
It may be a really good exercise to take a shot at it yourself. If you like the results and you haven't used any stock photos, then go with it.
Remember, HAVE FUN WITH IT!
